Unity and Collaboration in Union Leadership

In recent discussions, Brother Arthur Goldstein of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) and Retiree Advocate has employed harsh imagery and exaggerated metaphors to criticize members who have dedicated over sixty years to our union. This raises a critical question: Who are the Unity officers or members not responding to the concerns he mentions? Since July 1, 2024, Retiree Advocates have been seated, but these two summer months traditionally see few meetings, as most teachers prefer to avoid work-related discussions during this time.
In a genuine union, any member who feels slighted, ignored, or marginalized has not only the right but the obligation to speak out and seek redress. This is precisely what the Retiree Advocates did, leading to their victory in the leadership of the Retired Teachers Chapter. Therefore, Brother Goldstein, what is the issue at hand? Who is at fault? More importantly, how can we collaborate to find a solution?
Regarding the so-called aristocracy and the erring leaders of Unity, it seems that only Queen Latifah and King Kong were mentioned, and even then, only in passing. The claim that “Unity big shots” send their “paid ducklings” to Facebook is both inaccurate and insulting. I am neither paid nor a duck, although I do have an affinity for ducks—whether living or properly cooked. Brother Goldstein’s repeated insults for expressing my support for Unity and my use of Facebook are unwarranted. I am not a mindless follower of Unity; no one sends me anywhere except, perhaps, my wife, and that needs no further explanation.
The essence of a union lies in its ability to unify its members, addressing grievances constructively and fostering a spirit of collaboration. The strength and effectiveness of our union depend on our collective efforts to work together, despite our differences. It is essential for all members to engage in open dialogue, seek common ground, and work towards solutions that benefit the entire membership.
Let us move forward together, addressing our grievances constructively and fostering a spirit of unity and collaboration.
